Dental Implants: Pros and Cons

Follow These Guidelines to Deal with the Most Common Denture Problems

by Brett Clark

Dentures are an easy and effective solution to tooth loss. Dentures have evolved a lot over the years, and today's versions are completely different from those worn by older generations. The evolution of dentures has made them a little more comfortable and easier to wear than they were before; however, you still need to understand proper care and maintenance to prevent any problems when using them. Here are the quick fixes to the three most common denture problems.

Dentures Related Stomatitis

Stomatitis is one of the most common side effects of incorrect use of dentures. The condition presents itself with signs such as mild inflammation and complete redness of the mucous membrane in the mouth beneath the dentures. The condition is also commonly referred to as denture sore mouth, even though the sores are generally painless. Sometimes, some points of the gums might have localised bleeding, and at other times, the condition could be accompanied by inflammation of the corners of the mouth. The condition results from poor dental hygiene when wearing dentures. People with diabetes and conditions like HIV are also likely to develop denture-related stomatitis. This condition can be managed by regular brushing of the teeth and administration of antibiotics to deal with the candida bacteria.

Loose Dentures in the Mouth

Another common problem associated with dentures is ill-fitting and loose dentures inside the mouth. Loose dentures happen due to problems such as bone resorption, which is shrinkage of the gum. This problem can be prevented by creating dentures that cover as much of your bone as possible. Signs of loose dentures include odd clicking sounds when you talk and problems when eating. Only a competent dentist can test you and determine whether you need to have your dentures tightened.

Mouth and Gum Irritation

This problem is common when the dentures are new. It takes time for new dentures to fit and feel comfortable inside the mouth. To avoid creating further inflammation inside the mouth, you should eat soft foods and eat food in small bites until your mouth gets used to the dentures. If the condition persists, there are alternatives such as implants and overdentures to keep reduce inflammation.

Dentures need proper installation, care and maintenance to serve you well. It is advisable to consult a competent dentist when dealing with these dental problems. A trusted dentist will create the perfect dentures for you and follow up with the right maintenance processes.
