Dental Implants: Pros and Cons

3 Things That Might Happen Once You Finish Your Course of Invisalign

by Brett Clark

Before patients begin their orthodontic treatment with braces or Invisalign, they expect that it may take a while before they get used to wearing an oral appliance on their teeth. However, what many patients do not realize is that there will also be an adjustment period after a course of Invisalign or braces has finished.

Remember, your teeth have just spent months or even years, being pushed into new positions. Just like you had to adjust to your braces or aligners at the beginning of your treatment, you will also have to adjust to not having braces or aligners at the end of your treatment. When your treatment finish, expect to experience the following 3 sensations.

Your Teeth May Shift

In the days and weeks after you finish your course of Invisalign, you might notice that your teeth are shifting. This is to be expected as your teeth have just spent so long being held in place by your aligners. This process is known as settling. As you eat and talk, your teeth will move slightly, moving into a more comfortable and natural alignment than was possible with your aligners always on.

Orthodontists expect this and know that it usually results in a more favourable bite pattern. However, ensure that you continue to use the retainer your orthodontist gave you and should you notice that your front teeth are shifting considerably, you should see your dentist right away. Too much movement will compromise your bite and the appearance of your smile.

Your Teeth Will Feel a Little Loose

When you finish your Invisalign treatment, the bone that supports your teeth will be soft. It needs time to harden and become dense and this process will take up to a few months to complete.

During the first few days especially, your teeth will feel slightly loose. However, this sensation should gradually lessen as the weeks go by. If it doesn't, be sure to get in touch with your dentist so they can examine your teeth to make sure everything is as it should be.

Your Teeth May Feel Tender

It is also quite normal for your teeth to feel more tender than usual after your orthodontic treatment comes to an end. You may experience sensitivity too. Your teeth need to adjust to not having your brace or aligner up against them now that your treatment has ended and because of this, may be a little sore. In a few days, your teeth should feel normal again.

These are all normal sensations so don't be alarmed if you experience them after completing your orthodontic treatment. Do, however, ensure that you visit your dentist soon so they can check that everything is as it should be.
