Dental Implants: Pros and Cons

Important Reminders When Preparing to Visit your Periodontist

by Brett Clark

Dental health is an important part of general body health. Experts recommend that people have a dental checkup at least twice a year. While a general dentist can help with most of the common oral issues, some conditions may need specialized care. That's where periodontists come in. With additional specialized training, they can deal with complex dental issues like dental implants, oral inflammation, periodontal diseases, etc. That said, many people dread a periodontist visit. To alleviate the fears, here are a few preparatory things you can do to make the visit better.

Book and confirm your appointment

Most periodontists work on an appointment basis. If you just show up you might be forced to wait for a long time or even end up not being served. Save yourself the inconvenience. Do your booking in good time. A few hours before the agreed time, you can call in to confirm with the periodontist. However, if your condition deteriorates, don't suffer in silence. Call and explain yourself. Special arrangements can be made for serious or emergency cases.

Carry your dental records with you

If it is your first visit to a particular periodontist, they will want to know your dental history. Hand over the records or offer that information readily and answer any follow-up questions they may have. If you can have your regular periodontist transfer the records, even better. However, don't get irritated with the questions. It's for your good. Your dental history will dictate how the periodontist will proceed. The clearer the picture, the better it is for everyone. If you are allergic to certain drugs, it wise to share that so they don't prescribe drugs or medications that will react badly with your body.

Work on your hygiene

When you schedule a visit with any doctor, you can be sure you will be in close contact. That can be pretty uncomfortable if your hygiene is wanting. To avoid that, make sure to clean up properly beforehand. Take a shower, dress well and don't forget to wear your favourite cologne. Moreover, brush your teeth thoroughly. Since the periodontist will be inspecting your teeth quite closely, you want to be sure they are in the best form possible. Finally, be ready with your questions or clarification points. The periodontist will gladly answer any questions you have. If need be, you can work out the date for a follow-up visit or the next checkup.
